Item Description

Melitta Schiffer nee Dickstein was born at Trieste within the old Austro Hungarian Empire. She studied at the Weimar Academy of Arts for five years including the period in 1919 that it became known as the Bauhaus under Walter Gropius.

In 1935 Melitta Schiffer held her first solo exhibition at the Jewish Museum in Berlin and in the following year emigrated to Palestine. She was one of the first members of the Haifa artists colony, Ein Hod, founded by Marcel Janco.

Melitta Schiffer exhibited widely across Europe, including the Ben Uri Gallery in London.

This mixed media work on paper is signed in Hebrew and dated 1958.
